Suffering from jaw joint pain or jaw pain near the ear? Or maybe when you open and close your mouth, you feel your jaw crackling or hearing a crackle in your ear? Dizziness or pain, buzzing or ringing in the ears, difficulty or grinding of the teeth – all these ailments can be caused by disorders of the jaw joint that need to be treated.
Disorders of the jaw joint can occur for different reasons, such as neurological, psychological or anatomical changes. For example, a serious injury experienced in the past at the joint site can remind you of pain even after some time, and the inflammation caused by the injury can be the beginning of arthritis. On average, every third adult suffers from unconscious grinding of the teeth and the consequences caused by it, one of which is an irregular bite. An irregular bite is also the cause of pain in the jaw joint or other disorders.
The purpose of SAŽS
Our chewing system consists of many components, so treating the jaw joint is not a simple process. Teething and chewing – during both processes, not only the teeth, jaw joints and chewing muscles play an important role, but also the bones of the skull and the general statics of the spine. The temporomandibular joint (anatomically – joints) and the masticatory muscles support the position of the lower jaw and movements: protruding, closing, biting, chewing.
All these movements are performed smoothly if there is a correct interaction between the joint head and the joint disc, the ligament apparatus, the masticatory muscles and the teeth. If the system is functioning poorly, problems may occur and the jaw may appear to be cracking. The most common symptoms are headaches and facial pain. These pains are usually caused by excessive tension in the masticatory muscles.
The following symptoms report about disorders of the temporomandibular joint, signaling the need for jaw treatment.
- crunching of the jaw joint when chewing, yawning or squeezing;
- limited gaping (usually seen when you need to bite an apple or a bun and it is impossible to open enough);
- Dislocation of the lower jaw after a strong gap;
- pain in the face, temples, neck area, unexplained headache;
- Grinding teeth or severe tooth pressure at night.
Disorders of the temporomandibular joint are abbreviated as CMD (Craniomandibular Dysfunction). The abbreviation is made up of three words:
- Cranium = skull.
- Mandibula = lower jaw.
- Dysfunction = impaired function.
This concept defines disorders of the function of the teeth, joints of the jaws and the masticatory muscles, as well as the bones of the cervical spine and the bones of the skull.
What causes SAŽS disorders?
Our teeth should coincide with each other like cogwheels. When your jaw is crackling, it shows that they don’t match. In the optimal case, the masticatory muscles, joints and teeth function harmoniously. In the event of disorders or physical disturbances (too high filling, crown, tilted tooth), the rows of the teeth of the upper and lower jaws do not coincide and therefore the treatment of the jaw joint becomes necessary.
In such a discrepancy, the lower jaw automatically moves to a new position where the teeth gain the most contact between the upper and lower jaws. With this new position, the body tries to compensate for the disorders that are reported by grinding the teeth and the crackling of the jaw joint. In this new position of the jaw, our muscles are not used to working in a relaxed manner. The masticatory muscles experience unusual loads and their power is overloaded.
Since the masticatory muscles are directly related to other parts of the supporting-movement apparatus through the nerves, the functional disorders of the masticatory system can cause additional ailments and illnesses in other areas of the support-movement apparatus. The reverse influence is also possible, because all parts of the support-movement apparatus are related to each other, i.e. y. Sage problems can occur due to crooked hips, knees, feet or crooked spine. Can you imagine that this might require jaw joint treatment?
In addition, the cause of the disorders can be psychological factors, as chronic psychological stress activates the activity of the masticatory and head muscles. When consciousness is disconnected at night, the stress of the day is dealt with during the constant active work of the chewing muscles. Later, teeth grinding begins, a little later the jaw gnashes, etc. t.
What to do when you feel the symptoms?
If you experience signs of SAŽS disorder, it is advisable to contact a dentist who specializes in the treatment of these disorders immediately. Joint disorders very rarely go away on their own. Only a doctor who has performed a manual analysis of function and structures can determine the cause of the disorder and select treatment.
Most often, treatment with a special bite is sufficient. If the cause lies in an irregular bite, orthodontic treatment with braces is performed. It is also advised to perform joint exercises at home, if necessary, cooperation with specialists from other fields: physiotherapists, neurologists, ear, nose, and throat doctors. Surgical operations are required in exceptionally rare cases.
Why do I need jaw joint treatment?
Probably everyone who has ever faced this problem will confirm that the disorders in the jaw cause a lot of inconvenience: starting with aggravated yawning and ending with an unpleasant feeling when the jaw is crackling or grinding the teeth to make up the aesthetic appearance of the teeth. In addition to all the unpleasantness experienced, these disorders can worsen and cause even more problems if left untreated.
By visiting a dentist who specializes in jaw joint disorders, you will have the opportunity to cure all these ailments. You will no longer suffer from pain in the jaw joint, so you can forget about the unpleasant feeling that you feel every time you have a sore jaw near your ear.
The restored chewing function will allow you to enjoy eating without feeling discomfort and restraint. The tension in the face or neck will disappear in the morning. You will be able to smile freely, eat comfortably, and the restored bite in the future will allow you to avoid other problems that are usually caused by an untreated irregular bite.
